Week 12 — Assignment “Typography Research”
Project 3—this week has two parts: refine your Funnyface applied graphic and place it in the format for the NYTimes Book Review. Also collaborate on researching typography terms and design a presentation to share next week.
1/
Discuss:
1. Research the ten (10) typography terms which Chantal Jahchan refers to in her 2019 presentation En Route: Lebanese Vernacular Typography with Chantal Jahchan.
2. Forming collaborative groups, sign up using the Word docs in your class folder: either 9 AM ART 341-01 and 11 AM ART 341-02. Indicate which three to four (3–4) topics you will research. Each group should aim to cover all the terms.
Within groups everyone should choose four (3–4) terms to research, define in your own writing, cite your sources, and include image example—choose from this list:
serif
sans serif (sans)
calligraphy
movable type
modernism
vernacular
ligature
baselines
contrast
revival
3. Collaborate together to create a single presentation deck. Add your individual research slides to the group presentation–make it together online in our onedrive folder.
4. Find images to illustrate your research from the People’s GD Archive, Letterform Archive, AND other sources). Also see this toolkit for learning type history at the Letterform Archive. Here is an online UNCG library link to Ellen Lupton’s book, Thinking with Type, where you can find answers and definitions too.
5. Share a link to your Group’s presentation on the drive in the classblog comment space below.
Reply to others’ comments—either to the typography research presentation or to the NYT Book review mockup, your choice.
2/
Studio:
- Download the 2025 Indesign mockup layout folder for the NYTimes Book Review.
- Create your own version using this provided packaged file. Place your lettering graphic (from Week 11) in the blank space.
- Add your name as credit for the design (where it says “YOUR NAME”) —> **use small caps or all caps, with 25 tracking.
- Package and upload your version of the NYTimes Book Review mockup/ Indesign file folder to the drive for this week. Share a direct link to your NYT mockup on onedrive in the comment space below.

I really like your Book Review composition! I think having the person behind the letters is a great choice; it really helps illustrate your topic and just makes it more interesting to look at overall.
Hi William,
I think your piece works very well with The NY Times Outline and you did very good with the information in your parts of the presentation.
Hi William!
I love how the material you used aligns with the NYT editorial you designed 🙂 your typography presentation also looks amazing!
Hi William,
I really liked your composition. I liked how you connected the q-tips to an ear, and including a person in the back really help compliment the letters. From what I got from this, I also liked how intentional the placement of the text was.
Hi William! I think the composition of your book review was really well-thought out. It fits in with the typography neatly!

Hey Lucio, I really like how you took a denotative approach and took the denotations of words and working with the literal meaning ran with it and made something of your own.

Hey Ava, love your final design! I love how bright the colors are it really stands out!
The editorial mockup looks great. The textures and choice of color look fitting for the phrase. Also the offset scale and positioning on the A and the Y add a lot of visual interest without needing a busy composition.
Love the Texture on the NYT editorial PDF
Hi Ava,
I really like your outline for The NY Times and you’ve done a good job with organizing your presentation!
Hey Ava! I wanted to make a comment about your NYT editorial. I did not get a chance to see it before so I do not know the complete story. But I really like your piece! The colors go well together and are bright. The colors draw you into the word, there’s kind of a blurry effect with them as well. Well done!
Hi Ava! I love the textures you used throughout the work, and I think the color scheme is beautiful! It creates almost a sense of unease in how bright it is but in a good way.

I think your editorial looks amazingggg and the use of material to create the islands was so smart. Everything looks so professional, and seems like something I’d actually see on a newsstand

🙂
Hey Jackson, I love how realistic your final design looks! It really looks like something I would see in a magazine!
Love the combination of value and texture on the final NYT Pdf file
Hi Jackson,
I like how there are so many elements to your composition when it comes to the material in the typography, and the items in the background. I also really like how the typography feels really integrated into the background. It feels like the typography was actually set in the background, and not just letters thrown on top of a background

Hello Autumn,
Your NYT Mockup is quite striking. I immediately noticed the diagonal configuration of the letters across the screen, similar to my project. You also used a dark background to contrast the glowing letters which was quite nice.
Hi Autumn! I wanted to talk about your mockup as I did not see it before. The bright letters go with the word nicely. I really like the fact the words aren’t straight across, your design is simply but really effective! I also like the material you used!

I really like your Book Review composition!! The spilled popcorn on the carpet is such a creative idea and it looks great! Adding the popcorn bucket and extra popcorn bits around the letters does a great job and really integrating the letters into the scene. And I also like the vignette you added, it gives it a sort of spotlight effect which fits in with the theater aesthetic.

Hey Saige,
I like how your image looks with the mockup and the phrase of SOS is interesting and overall looks mysterious. I was glad to see someone else do seashells as well and I think we did a similar approach of the inversion! I loved how yours came out and I think the hidden message of SOS matches perfectly for the theme of seashells/ sea.
Hey Saige, I really like the etheral vibe of your book review image. It feels increadibly isolating and cold in a way.

Hi Ximena, I really enjoy your NYT composition and find your use of adjusting the colors of the M&M’s really effective in combination with your background that you’ve added in. Great job!
How pretty! I love how the smooth texture of the medium looks against the smooth sky-like background. It can be diffifult to make solar flare work in a graphic design setting, but you made it work here!

Hi Clint, I am really enjoying your NYT composition and find the way that you have treated the coins is super cool and makes each word really pop off the screen. It almost feels like as if they could be stickers. I think the use of a grayscale background in combination with the drop shadows really helps to highlight your letterforms.
